Sandwich Generation

If you find yourself bouncing between the needs of your own children and helping an aging parent, then welcome to my world! You're an honorary member of "The Sandwich Generation"and you're not alone! The Pew Research Center estimates that just over 1 of every 8 Americans aged 40 to 60 is rearing a child and also providing some care or assistance for a parent. Although the sandwich analogy might be "cute", actually finding yourself in this situation can be overwhelming... to say the least. And for me... it was downright frightening.

I'm at an age where my own health issues are pretty daunting... I fell back in 2009 and am finally on the other side of a lengthy recovery. I wasn't sure there for awhile if I could live alone again... My own mother (who is 93) lives down the street. And recently my daughter lost her job and she and her 5 year old daughter moved back home.

Like many things in life there are positives and negatives. The same is true with being in the sandwich. I love the company! But I know it has been hard on my daughter to have to share her space again. I worry about her and I know she worries about me she's in the sandwich too! Our saving grace has been Interventional TeleHealth! After my fall, returning home from rehab was scary! I didn't know if I could manage on my own again... I had always assumed since my Mom was able to stay home into her 90's that I would be able to as well. I was fortunate enough to find CareCycle Solutions when I came home from rehab. A monitor was placed in my home to make sure my health status didn't trend in the wrong direction. When something was out of my normal range, a clinical TeleHealth Coach would be on the phone in minutes to check on me. I knew right away that we had to get my Mom on service too. I am so reassured on the days when I can't check on her that someone who knows a lot more than I do about heart failure is keeping watch.
